Relive the '80s… take your pick of where.
New Orleans is known for its wild nightlife, so if you're down for some familiar tunes in an exciting atmosphere, hit up one of the many Throwback nights around town. Each features an eclectic array of retro hits on vinyl as well as a relaxed, hip environment.
French Quarter venue One Eyed Jacks features a traditional '80s night every Thursday. Come early or expect to be waiting in a line around the block for this popular event. DJ Todd Taylor blasts his expansive collection of '80s-only tracks, while eye-catching dancers frame film favorites of the era like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" above the stage. One Eyed Jacks is known for its unusual décor, adding to the eclectic, sassy vibe.
The Warehouse District's Republic prides itself on a newer Throwback night every Friday, with DJ Damion Yancy spinning more recent classics. In addition to these tunes, expect to see the occasional local indie band showcase. The spacious club's trendy atmosphere draws in the crowds, yet the two floors give ample room for grooving well into the morning. Both original Nintendo games and '80s hit movies like "The Goonies" can be seen silently behind the DJ. The music selection includes '90s and recent indie hits as well, providing an interesting mix of beloved danceable songs. Newcomers should expect to dress to impress for this hip weekly party.
The Hangar introduced a New Wave Night just last month. This event is presented by one of New Orleans' premier '80s DJs, Friede. Dubbed "Rewind" night, the venue boasts a compilation of '80s DVDs as eye candy to match the vast array of '80s tunes.
The '80s are a decade students barely remember, yet seemingly just can't get enough of. Luckily this city has plenty of offerings, covering everyone from the "girls who just wanna have fun" to the "karma chameleons."
