Scoring 18 runs off 23 hits is definitely unusual for a regular season college baseball game.

When the Green Wave (10-5) rounded the bases nearly 20 times in nine innings in its 18-11 win over Northwestern State on Wednesday, it felt more like watching a home-run derby competition than a simple game. Hitting was contagious on both teams, as the first few innings lasted nearly an hour.

"It was just one of those things where we started having good at-bats early, guys built on each other and we had a great day," associate head coach Mark Kingston said. "Obviously, it was our best day of the season."

Freshman third baseman Rob Segedin had a monumental day, connecting at all six at-bats and tying the school's single-game hitting streak with a home run, a double and six RBIs.

"I tried to go up to the plate with some confidence," Segedin said. "The coaches have been preaching that for the past three days and I think it's finally starting to pay off. You can see it in our hitting. We've been more aggressive at the plate and swinging the bat a lot harder."

Junior left fielder Anthony Scelfo and junior designated hitter Andrew Rodgers also batted well, going 5-for-6 with one homer and 3-for-3 with two homers and five RBIs, respectively.

"All that hard work finally paid off," Rodgers said. "I felt comfortable today at the plate and all of our hitters did. It was a good day all around, and we really needed that as hitters - to come out and score a lot of runs."

Unfortunately, Tulane's impressive offensive performance could not be matched defensively, as the team recycled five pitchers for the match, giving up 11 total runs off 15 hits. Junior right-hander Trey Martin (1-1) earned the win, coming on in the seventh inning and shutting down the Demons in the final innings.

Wednesday's high scoring game was a far cry from the previous night's 11 inning battle, which also ended in the Wave's favor 4-3. The Green Wave led for the majority of the game, entering the ninth inning 3-1.
