Recent rape case sparks controversy

Victim decries, protests joint hearing board's failure to suspend rapist after decision

Tulane's joint hearing board found a student guilty of rape April 18. The board did not suspend or expel the student, and as such, the student remains part of the Tulane community. The accused could not be reached for comment. Sanctions against him consisted of mandated counseling at the Center for Educational Resources and Counseling, the continuation of a prior order of no communication with the victim and the continuation of a previous prohibition of entering residence halls.

TU salaries lower than peer schools'

Tulane's faculty salaries are low in comparison to the salaries of faculty at comparable institutions, according to a recently released report by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The "2007-08 Report on the Economic Status of the Profession" released by the AAUP says that, at Tulane, the average salary of a full professor is $119,800; the average salary of an associate professor is $82,400; and the average salary of an assistant professor is $66,100.

T2 reconfigured due to budget cuts

Provost Michael Bernstein has planned to fundamentally alter the T2 program next year due to budget cuts. The reconfiguration has incited controversy, as students have recently expressed questions about what will happen next year. In addition to program changes, Kelly Jo Larsen's position as assistant director of student transitions and leadership will be eliminated as of Dec.

Tulane's image up locally

Tulane's relationship with the city appears to be changing for the better. The school's community instituted a series of rebuilding projects in post-Katrina New Orleans by expanding public service programs and setting new service-oriented graduation requirements.

Unfinished projects scatter campus

Students walking around campus often notice the constant construction and repair on buildings. They also tend to notice the unfinished projects around campus such as the "Bubble" behind Bruff Commons and the 9/11 Memorial near Richardson Building on the academic quad.

SCALE presents youth poetry

McMain middle and high school came to Tulane on Monday to recite their poetry in der Rathskeller. The Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education program tutors literacy at McMain every Monday, and this week, tutors invited students to campus. Coordinators Kathleen Larkin and Anna Huber organized the event as a way to help McMain students express themselves.

Anderson Cooper

CNN journalist Anderson Cooper will be speaking in McAlister Auditorium at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. He is slated to speak for 45 minutes about his experiences and then participate in a 15-minute question-and-answer session with the audience. Sophomore Tim Clinton is Tulane University Campus Programmings's Lyceum chair and coordinated Cooper's visit.

Turchin vendor robbed of $40k

Wednesday morning, a gunman broke into a vendor's office in Turchin stadium, tied up the vendor and stole approximately $40,000 in cash from a safe, according to police. The robbery took place around 11:00 a.m. According to the TUPD report the suspect was carrying a black handgun.

Evaluations receive mixed reviews

Scantrons are a familiar sight for students at the end of the semester, but not just on exam day. Since at least the 1950s, Tulane has used end-of-semester course and instructor evaluation forms as a means of providing information to both faculty and students.

Crime Watch

Simple Burglary On April 18, a student reported that his room was burglarized by another student. The reporting person said that he and the suspect are no longer friends because of the latter's drug habit. The suspect apparently took the reporting person's 40 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol and told a mutual friend that he had taken the property.

Bush meets with Canadian, Mexican leaders in NOLA President Bush met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon in New Orleans early this week. The talks, which began Monday, covered immigration, trade and smuggling of drugs and weapons across American borders with the two nations.

Another week in the world

Europe returns to coal, raising climate fears While the rest of the world is trying to control and lower carbon emissions to reduce global warming, a major power plant in Italy is going from using oil to using coal. During the next five years, Italy hopes to increase its need for coal from 14 percent to 33 percent.
